Welcome to our beautiful watermill on the River Marecchia.

This corner of eastern Tuscany is particularly unspoilt, a corner of Paradise. Come and see for yourselves! Stunning mountain scenery, a river to plunge into, wildlife, friendly people, art, architecture and healthy, wholesome local food and drink. Add to these ingredients a comfortable, sensitively restored watermill, let at very reasonable rates and "ecco - la ricetta per una vacanza perfetta". The recipe for a perfect holiday!

"Recharge your batteries"

By the Ziervogel-Allen family, July 26th - August 9th, 2014

This mill is wonderful with lovely hosts, the perfect place for children to play in the river, make dams, catch baby fish/bugs, swim etc. A proper country holiday like we had as kids. The wood fired oven pizza in the local village was to die for and local sulphate free wine guaranteed not to give you a hangover! Rimini is just over 1hr drive and is well worth it if you have kids, sandy beaches are clean and well maintained, gentle currents, expensive chairs and umbrellas, but worth it for a day with clean well stocked toilets- don't be put off by it's 'tourist' image, it's a great day out. There are so many gorgeous villages and towns in the vicinity to explore and the 20 course Sunday lunch at the hotel up the road is an absolute must, you will have to skip some courses to fit it all in! All in all I would absolutely recommend this holiday to recharge your batteries and to show the kids that there is more to life than computers and TV!

Response to review:

You were "lovely" guests too and we treasure the painted stones that you left behind for us. We're so pleased you "got it" - i.e. your comment 'a proper country holiday like we had as kids' is one of the aspects we aim for at Il Mulino. Our children and grandchildren come every summer to recharge their batteries too. We would love to see you again - we have quite a few repeat bookings - and thank you for your appreciative comments. "Tot ziens!".

We had the best holiday at Il Mulino. I'm not sure any words can adequately describe how great this holiday was. The people, the food, the wine, the towns, the scenery were all fantastic. There was so much to do and Maurice and Angela were really helpful with sharing information and ideas giving us a local insight into things to do. This included walks, restaurants, cookery lesson, local wine, the buskers festival at Pennabilli and much more. The accommodation was very comfortable. There was some great wildlife and beautiful wild flowers in the surrounding area. It was lovely to be able to sit out for breakfast and evening meals. We enjoyed a couple of excellent bbq's too - getting some lovely meat from the local butcher, We stayed for a week but with everything we packed in it felt we were there longer. I would thoroughly recommend a holiday at Il Mulino.

Response to review:

"Grazie" for your lovely comments and it was a pleasure to welcome you to our little secret corner of Tuscany. As we are both fluent in Italian (and Maurice is half Italian), we feel able to help our guests get the most out of the area and we're pleased you all felt you made the most out of your stay. June is the period when fireflies make their magical appearance too and the wild flowers are at their best, which you discovered on your mountain walks. Come again!!!!

"Thank you, Angela and Maurice, for yet another wonderful holiday at Il Mulino. This has been our fourth visit so it is obvious how much we love it here! This time has been very different, though, for we have come without our children (grown up ones) and grandchildren. It has been lovely to have more time to sip wine and appreciate the peace and beauty.

We have done some of our, by now, traditional things: Sunday lunch at Piero's, dinner at the Agriturismo, truffle hunting with Professor Tocci, swimming in the river - and they were all as good as ever.

We did 2 new walks:

  1. To Gattara along the white road. There were lovely views and we fortified ourselves with porcini and pasta at the trattoria. There are some long uphill/downhill stretches along the route and we were pleased not to ache next day!
  2. Montebotolino to Montebotolino peak. This is a lovely walk through woodland - but it is very steep and took us rather longer than suggested! The German fortifications are extremely interesting and the views from the peak are amazing!

Thank you again for a brilliant holiday - a week wasn't long enough but, hopefully, we'll be back before too long for our fifth visit!"

We hope so, Pat and John!

From Catherine and Dick Bowen. June 6th - July 5th 2014

"We came back again this year - what more can we say? Actually lots! Il Mulino in June is completely different from September and even better (if that's possible). Again, we have enjoyed every single day here but some highlights are:

  • The fireflies - indescribable and beautiful
  • The wildflowers and birds (hoo poe)
  • The four Della Robbia churches - it was a great privilege and "grazie mille" to Fulvio and Angela for the highlight of the holiday!
  • The mountains and the valley.
  • Of course, the stream.

Thank you, Maurice and Angela for your hospitality, help and suggestions (particularly with flat tyre) - it has been truly wonderful.

We look forward to coming back another year.

Best wishes.

We look forward to welcoming you again and sharing supper and vino with you again! A presto!

Here's a selection of reviews from the past, in no particular order...

June 18th - 25th 2011 - The O'Rourkes loved Il Mulino...it was everything we'd hoped for - including the weather. The river was especially good - like bathing in a volvic Jacuzzi!

June 25th - 2nd July 2011. A wonderful week combining great sightseeing with relaxing in a hidden Paradise of spectacular wildflowers...Palio in Anghiari during the week...lots of drums, flags, trumpets and mediaeval costumes. The butchers and fruit and veg shops in Badia are excellent - very friendly and tolerant of non-Italian speakers! Tony and Jenny.

July 9th - 16th 2011...the boys have loved the river and want to stay another week...We hope to visit again. We have all had a most relaxing and peaceful week. We haven't felt the need to sightsee, haven't felt the need to go further than the mill and river. Selena, David, Thomas and Cameron Isaac.

6th August - 13th 2011 Back again; and it feels just like home...and then there is the truffling with Professor Tocci and Chicco: a dog who makes up in enthusiasm for his short-comings in obedience! A wonderful fun time with some genuinely lovely people. Truffles too! The Rogers family.

September 12th - 16th 2011 (The Italian studentesse!) Returned to the mill; as beautiful as before but the weather even better - 30 most days...Penny Krotunas. - What a brilliant five days. We've done such a lot! Fabulous to be able to dip into the river to cool off. Lovely! Jan Alsmeyer.

September 24th 2011 Pam and John Burton: We have enjoyed a wonderful, restful week in magnificent surroundings. Ticked all the "boxes" for what we wanted our of our time here. Also enjoyed trips to Arezzo, Sansepolcro and a return after many years to Gubbio. Il Mulino - Italy at its best!

Sturton family. Aug 2010: "This was the 'best' family holiday; we had 3 generations, no telly, lots of nature - what more could we ask!"

Mecklem family. July 2010: "It's been lovely watching the children climb over the rocks, splash in the river, chase dragonflies, smell the wild mint, catch tiny fish...."

Rowe family. July 2010: "It is hard to believe that 3 teenagers could enjoy a holiday without tv, computers, mobile phones, IPods etc. and still say they've enjoyed themselves."

Sept. '12 Provis family:" Thank you for all you did to make our holiday so exceptional."

Aug. '12. Dunns - "This has been the best house that we have ever stayed in: thank you again."
